Tails on the Trail

May 30, 2008
Jennifer Vanderau

It’s time once again for what has become our annual spring tradition. Our third annual Tails on the Trail Dog Walk and Parade is coming up soon and you don’t want to miss it!

Our Tails on the Trail dog walk and contest is actually a collaborative effort between CVAS and the Chambersburg Recreation Department and will be held on Saturday, June 14, rain or shine.

The walk will begin and end at the Henniger Field parking lot and include the Chambersburg Rail Trail. Participants will walk from Henniger Field to the South Gate Shopping Plaza and return to the field.

This is a great opportunity for animal-lovers to get a chance to see what downtown Chambersburg has to offer for dog-walkers. Registration forms are due by June 11, and are available at the Chambersburg Recreation Department on 235 S. Third St. For more information, give them a call at (717) 261-3275.

Registration on the day of the walk will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and the walkers, both four-legged and two-legged will take off at 10 a.m.

We’re asking participants to get sponsors for the walk and the proceeds will benefit the Rec Department and the animal shelter. Money raised will support Rail Trail enhancements for the Rec Department as well as adoptions and daily animal care for CVAS.

In addition to the dog walk, we will have “Pooches on Parade,” where all the four-legged participants will get a chance to strut their stuff at Henniger Field. The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. following the dog walk. That way, everyone can see all the furry friends who took part in the trek. That’s one of my favorite parts of the event. It’s so neat to see all the participants parading around the field.

Following the parade is when the dogs can show people what they’re really made of. We will have contests for pups to enter, which include Best Kisser, Most Obedient, Cutest Face and Best Look-Alike.

The best kisser has to show the judges his or her smooching ability by kissing mom or dad. The most obedient will wow the judges with a special trick or skill. The cutest face is fairly simple. If your pup makes others go “ooooh” and “ahhh” there’s a good chance he or she may have the cutest face. And finally, the one I can’t wait for is best look alike. If people have said you resemble your pup and you tend to agree, this is the contest for you. This part of the event is definitely a hoot.

Throughout the morning, we’ll have vendors and dog-related information and merchandise for the dog-lovers to peruse. If you have a business and would be interested in setting up a table, give me a call at (717) 263-5791 and we can get you ready for our “Tails on the Trail.”

We have a lot of fun with our Tails on the Trail and we’re looking to make this year just as enjoyable while we help out two great causes. Make sure you mark your calendars to join us.
