Bargains Galore!

January 25, 2008
Jennifer Vanderau

I have a new guilty little pleasure. I’ll admit, it’s a rather ridiculous one, but for the past few evenings, I’ve gotten hooked on Deal or No Deal.

I know, I know, it’s another game show, reality-type program that’s based quite solely on luck. I mean, let’s face it, there’s really no skill involved in trying to find which case has a million dollars in it. It’s nothing more than chance.

That’s part of the reason I could never go on the show – my luck isn’t up to that task.

Anyway, they make the show so tense with the banker calling to reveal the deal and dear old Howie Mandel and his “deal or no deal?” melodrama just pulls me right in.

But I have to tell you, if you want to find some deals on your own, you don’t really have to go all the way to Hollywood – many of them can be discovered right here in our very own backyard.

We have two thrift stores that support CVAS. (How’d you like that segue? Huh?) One of our stores is in Chambersburg on Main Street and one is in Shippensburg on King Street, and man, that’s where the deals really are.

First of all, my girls who run the stores are the best. There’s Diane in Shippensburg and Suann in Chambersburg, and they have help from a whole lot of wonderful folks. We wouldn’t have the success we do without these ladies. So if you ever stop by, make sure you tell them Jen said hello.

I have found bargains galore in our stores. I even have shirts that friends still comment on and when I tell them not only where I found it, but how little I paid, they’re shocked. Trust me, there are some great treasures to be discovered.

You can get surprisingly nice furniture at both our stores. In fact, I know our Chambersburg store just received two sweet recliners, so get there quick if you want to take a look.

For students moving into their first time apartment, our thrift stores would be a godsend. You could stock a kitchen with just about everything you would need.

I also can’t imagine how tough it must be to keep kids in clothes. They apparently grow like weeds. I know my mom was amazed at how quickly my brother would need new pants and shirts. Our thrift stores would be a fantastic answer for that little dilemma. We have an amazing supply of children’s clothes that won’t hurt your pocketbook.

There are also books, end tables, lamps, dishes, just about anything you could ever want.

The best part about our thrift stores is they directly help the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. The monetary income from our stores gives us a relatively consistent source of revenue to maintain the care for the animals in our kennels. So anything you purchase or donate will affect the lives of homeless pets. I can’t think of a better combination.

The ladies do have times and places for donation drop-offs, so make sure you give them a call before stopping by with your items. The number for our Chambersburg store is (717) 261-1996 and Shippensburg’s is (717) 477-8025.

We do ask that donations be in above-average condition and in good working order and we don’t accept food.

I also know they always need help at our thrift stores. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer to help sort or stock or keep the stores clean would most certainly be welcome with open arms. It would be a great way for folks who are retired to set their own hours while helping a great cause.

So if you’re looking for a bargain, look no farther than the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter’s thrift stores. You’ll make life a little better for homeless animals and come out feeling like you really made a good deal – one that might even impress Howie Mandel.
