Lost And Found

The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter receives many found animals every week. We also receive many phone calls from pet owners desperately seeking their lost animal. To help unite the two, CVAS maintains a "Central Registry" which contains a description (provided by the owner) of each lost animal. If an animal comes into the shelter matching one of those descriptions - the potential owner is contacted and asked to come in and identify their pet.

If you have lost your pet and are unsure of how to go about finding it, please use these helpful tips:

Check the "Lost & Found" ads in the local newspaper and remember to place a "lost" ad of your own. Many newspapers offer this service for free and animal shelters tend to check it regularly.

Post flyers in the area where your animal was lost with a description of your pet and information on how to contact you.

Contact Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter at (717) 263-5791. A staff member will take your name, address, phone number, and a description of your pet to keep on file in our "lost" registry. If an animal comes in matching your pet's description you will be contacted to come in and identify your animal. If a staff member isn't available at the time of your call, simply leave all the necessary information on our voice mail.

If you have found an animal and wish to locate its owner, please follow these helpful tips:

Check for ID tags or tattoos on the animal. If a rabies tag is present, contact the vet clinic or the county clerk’s office with the ID number and they should be able to put you in contact with the owner.

Be sure to check the "Lost & Found" ads in the local newspapers and don't forget to place a "found" ad of your own. Many newspapers offer this service for free.

Post "flyers" around the area where the animal was found with a description of the animal and information on how to reach you.

Contact CVAS at (717) 263-5791 to see if the animal's description matches one in our "lost" directory.
