A Note For Potential Adopters...

Hey, this is Jennifer -- I work here at CVAS -- and want to talk to people who may be interested in adopting one of these rescued dogs.

If you're anything like me, I know exactly what's going through your head when you look at the photos on the previous pages. Your heart breaks, then swells and you think, "I could love that little bugger forever. I'm coming to get him."

Before you start the car, please take a minute to read this. I've been talking with the staff here and we want everyone who's thinking about adopting one of these poor souls to know EXACTLY what they're getting into.

First of all these animals have more than likely spent the vast majority of their lives in a cage, so their not very socialized. Being in our kennels, some seem to respond well to people who walk up to their cage door, but for many of them, once they get outside that safe haven, they become quite shy and introverted.

Many of these four-legged babies have no idea how to walk on a leash or what one is even for.

None -- please read that exactly as it's written -- NONE of them are housebroken. At all. They're used to going to the bathroom in the same place they live.

Many are very timid, shy and afraid and need to be approached with caution in order for them not to flinch or run away from people they don't know. They've undergone a dramatic change in their lives and many of them are not at all sure how to handle this transition.

Amazingly enough, after all these souls have been through, we've seen very little fear aggression in these dogs. We believe they want love, they're just not sure how to get it in this new situation.

In addition, because of their physical condition, some of these animals may have medical issues that have not been discovered before they are adopted. Keep in mind, anyone who adopts one of these dogs may be looking at medical conditions down the road that could not have been noticed or anticipated at the time of adoption.

Some of these babies are fearful of any kind of noise that they're not used to and jump or jerk slightly when they hear an odd sound. Even with a crate (which we highly, HIGHLY recommend for these pups) an adopter will still have the issue of taking them out of the crate, putting them on a leash and teaching them to go to the bathroom outside. Even with a fenced in yard, many of these animals will more than likely be hard to corral back into the home.

It might be helpful for pups such as these to have another canine brother or sister to "hang out" with. For someone who understands their background, these animals could make a good second pet for a home. Sometimes they seem to respond better to other dogs than people.

With that in mind, we're looking for people who understand everything I've just written in the above paragraphs to come and take these pups to their forever homes.

What I'm trying to say here and the bottom line to this note is that these animals are going to take serious TIME and EFFORT to train. Even more so than your typical shelter pet. These animals are in NO WAY going to be instantaneously perfect pets. We want everyone considering adoption to know this UP FRONT.

When we sign off on the adoption agreement, we don't want these poor souls to have their lives be uprooted again and brought back to the shelter because of these issues.

So if you have the time, patience and love to show these dear babies what life should be like for a four-legged friend, please stop by the shelter and meet one of these special pups. When you stop by, please take a moment to TALK with the staff about the pet you're interested in, LISTEN to what we have to say about the specific animal, and discuss what you're needs are and what you're looking for in a pet so that we can match you with the animal or breed who would be best suited for your situation.

With effort and love, CVAS will help you find your best friend for life.
